Third Annual Business Appreciation Week Scheduled for May 5-9, 2008
PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – April 30, 2008 - Once again this year, the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners and the Department of Economic Development will celebrate Business Appreciation Week. The week of May 5-9 will feature a host of special events and activities to recognize and thank businesses of all sizes and industries for their contributions to the county’s economy and quality of life and help the community better understand the important role that businesses play in our local economy.
This year’s theme will focus on businesses that support or enhance Calvert County’s lucrative tourism industry. The week will include special events, workshops and networking activities and personal visits with county business owners by the Board of County Commissioners and staff from the Department of Economic Development.

Prime Time Places Second
Prime Time Children’s and Youth Activity Center in Owings, Md.,
Places Second in 2008 National Child Care Center of the Year Awards
PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – April 28, 2008 – Entering the three-year-olds’ room at Prime Time Children’s and Youth Activity Center in Owings, Md., is like being swallowed up in a watery ocean world of imagination, color and wonder. Each room at the Center is decorated with a special theme that inspires play and creativity for the youngsters; for three-year-olds, the theme is “under the sea.”
Owner and Center director Brenda Tyrrell greets the children this morning and 15 slightly messy faces look up from their morning snack of Pop-Tarts and milk to sing-song their good morning to “Miss Brenda.” Tyrrell beams. “This is what it’s all about,” she says. “We’re raising our future leaders here and we want this to be a place that feels like home and prepares them for a lifetime of learning.”
Tyrrell and her crew have much to be proud of these days. In February, they were notified they had been selected as a finalist for 2008 National Child Care Center of the Year to be bestowed at the annual conference of the National Association of Child Care Professionals (NACCP) in New Orleans.
On April 17, Tyrrell was pleased to learn they had won second place. “Of course, I would have preferred first place, but since this is only our first year with the association and it is a nationwide honor that required in-person verification by a member of the Association, we’re still very happy with our placement. To me, it’s a pat on the back – an important affirmation from professionals in our field that says we’re doing a good job here.”
The award is given to a child care center that best demonstrates the association’s beliefs in strong curriculum development, knowledge of early childhood education, best business practices, family interaction, creativity, leadership, community efforts and professional development. NACCP is a 1,700-member association based in Austin, Texas, with members throughout the United States and Canada.
But Prime Time and its staff are no strangers to recognition and awards. In 2005, they received the 17th Annual Child Care Challenge Award sponsored by the Women Legislators of Maryland; in 2007 they were re-accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education and the National AfterSchool Association; and in May 2008, kindergarten teacher Kelly Durnbaugh will receive the Recognition of Superior Effort (R.O.S.E.) from the Maryland State Child Care Association.
This year, Prime Time also celebrates their 20th year of operation. “When we opened the first child care center in Chesapeake Beach, I said we would put Calvert County on the map for high quality child care,” said Tyrrell. “And I think we have done that.”
Tyrrell admits that running a child care center with 49 employees and 200 children is a more than full-time job on most days. But she can think of no other work she would rather do, and could not have done it without support from her family. “Sometimes when I get stressed out,” she says, “I just go out on the playground, stand under a shade tree, close my eyes and listen to the giggles and laughter coming from the children. That’s what it’s all about. That’s why I do this.”

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. April 22, 2008 รข€“ Special Olympics Calvert County will host its fifth annual Inspiration 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, May 17, 2008. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. in front of the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons; the run/walk starts at 10:00 a.m.
Participants can be part of a leisurely walk through Solomons or a more competitive 5K race, marked by the Calvert County Sheriff's Office. All are welcomed and encouraged to join in the festivities and there is no charge to participate; however, those who pledge or donate at least $25 will be given an Inspiration 5K Run/Walk T-shirt. Water and snacks will be provided.
This event is the primary fundraiser for Special Olympics Calvert County and all proceeds go toward providing athletic opportunities to intellectually challenged people in the community. The organization's vision is to help bring Special Olympics athletes into the larger society under conditions where they are respected, accepted and given the chance to become useful and productive citizens. The values of friendship, integrity, opportunity, quality and sportsmanship are central to the organizations objectives.
Special Olympics chapters around the world have helped more than 2.5 million people with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition. The Calvert County chapter offers training and competitive opportunities in aquatics, bowling, floor hockey, softball, soccer, track & field and basketball. Many athletes participate in more than one sport and they, like most young athletes, find their time on the court, in the pool, at the bowling alley or on the field to be the highlight of the week.

George W. Owings, III to Host the Calvert County Literacy Council’s 2008 BEE for Literacy
PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., - April 16, 2008 – George W. Owings, III, former member of the Maryland House of Delegates and former Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs for Maryland, will serve as honorary host for the Calvert County Literacy Council’s 12th Annual BEE for Literacy on Friday, May 9, 2008, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Kings Landing Park’s Patuxent Hall. PNC Bank is gold sponsor for the event.
Owings, a lifelong resident of Calvert County and long-time advocate of adult literacy, returns this year to offer his support to the annual event. Maria Birnkammer, Executive Director of the Calvert County Literacy Council, is thrilled that Owings will be on hand to liven up the event with his special flair of wit and humor. “George has hosted our event in the past and we know he will make the evening special, both for the spelling teams and for the spectators,” she said. “We’re so happy he will be with us again to help create the awareness that adult literacy tutoring in Calvert County needs.”
The annual event pits teams of four adult spellers against each other in an elimination-type competition. Like traditional spelling bees, there are a number of rounds with the words becoming progressively harder throughout the evening. However, these adult teams come in costume which helps keep the evening light hearted and not too competitive. Last year’s winners, The Letterheads, sponsored by Second Looks Books, will return this year to defend their title. In addition to the spelling entertainment, there will be food, wine and beer. A silent auction will be ongoing throughout the evening.
Owings said he looks forward to a rousing evening of entertainment, good food and good spelling. “The Literacy Council’s annual spelling bee is always a fun evening and of course the proceeds go to a worthy cause,” he said. “I’m happy to serve as honorary host because this is a unique and entertaining evening. Besides, unless I decide to join a team, the pressure will be on the contestants, not me – and that’s much easier than being put on the spot to spell a word like ‘raconteur,’” he joked.
